  • Kakrapar Atomic Power Plant, Unit-3 (KAPP-3), Gujarat has attained criticality at around 09:36 Hrs on 22 July 2020. It is India's first 700 MWe (megawatt electric) Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) with innovative features.

2. Turkmenistan gets observer status in World Trade Organization

  • World Trade Organization (WTO) General Council has granted the "Observer" status to the central Asian country Turkmenistan.
  • With this, Turkmenistan has become the last former Soviet republic to establish formal ties with the trade body. Turkmenistan has become the 25th observer of the organization.

National Broadcasting Day celebrated on 23rd July

National Broadcasting Day is observed on 23rd July all over India. On this day in 1927, the first-ever radio broadcast in the country went on the air from the Bombay Station under the Indian Broadcasting Company.


History of National Broadcasting Day:

  • The first radio broadcast was made on July 23, 1927, from Bombay Station. The station was then owned by a private company called the Indian Broadcasting Company.
  • The Government took over the broadcasting on April 1, 1930, and renamed it as Indian State Broadcasting Service (ISBS).
  • It was initially on an experimental basis. Later it permanently came under government control in 1932.
  • On 8th of June, 1936, the Indian State Broadcasting Service became All India Radio. Currently, AIR is one of the largest public broadcasting organisations in the world.

DRDO sets-up COVID-19 Testing Facility at DIHAR, Leh

COVID-19 testing facility has been established by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) at the Leh based laboratory Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR). The testing facility has been launched to improve the rate of testing to determine the Corona cases in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The testing facility having capability of screening 50 samples per day will also help in keeping close watch of the infected personally.

The COVID-19 testing facility would also provide support in training manpower for COVID testing and will also address future bio-threats and carry out R&D activities pertinent to agro-animals diseases. Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR) is a life science laboratory of DRDO which works on cold arid agro-animal technologies. It screens and identifies the medicinal and aromatic plants to exploit them for use for defence purposes.

Kakrapar Atomic Power Plant, Unit-3 (KAPP-3), Gujarat has attained criticality at around 09:36 Hrs on 22 July 2020. It is India’s first 700 MWe (megawatt electric) Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) with innovative features.

What is meant by “Nuclear reactor attaining criticality”?

A nuclear reactor is said to attained criticality when every nuclear fission event releases a sufficient number of neutrons in order to sustain an ongoing series of reactions or a self-sustaining chain reaction.

KAPP-3 is located at Kakrapar Site, Gujarat, along with two 220 MWe PHWRs (KAPS-1 & KAPS-2) which are in operation and another 700 MWe PHWR (KAPP-4) which is under advanced stage of construction. An exhaustive safety review of various safety aspects was carried out by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) to ensure satisfactory compliances to regulatory requirements. The permission for First Approach to Criticality of KAPP-3 was granted on 17 July, 2020.

11. Oxford Covid-19 vaccine’s human trial shows positive result

  • The human trial of COVID-19 vaccine candidate developed by the University of Oxford and backed by AstraZeneca Plc has shown a positive result.
  • The researchers found their experimental COVID-19 vaccine produced a dual immune response in people aged 18 to 55.
  • Oxford's vaccine is designed to reduce disease and transmission. Director at the Jenner Institute of Oxford University, Dr Adrian Hill, explains the mechanism of this vaccine “this vaccine triggers both arms of the immune system".
  • The vaccine was officially known as AZD1222, prompted a protective immune response in hundreds of people who got the shot and did not prompt any serious side effects.

The Punjab government has signed an agreement with the Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar, in the area of skill development.

Important highlights of the agreement:

  • The agreement provides IIT’s technical education department to become an academic mentor for the state’s engineering colleges at Gurdaspur and Ferozepur, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Skill Institute at Chamkaur Sahib, five government polytechnics and 10 government ITIs.
  • The institute will help the state in developing a model ITI and a model polytechnic. The IIT to help the state in the manufacture of small devices for controlling water wastage in irrigation.
  • Punjab Government helps to resolve the IIT’s land acquisition-related issues, while urging the institute to develop its campus as a green campus, with extensive landscaping and afforestation.

Greta Thunberg named winner of Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity

The 17 year old climate activist from Sweden, Greta Thunberg has been named winner of the inaugural Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity. She will receive a prize money of 1 million euro. She has been awarded for her efforts to mobilise younger generations to tackle climate change. She commenced a protest outside the Swedish parliament in 2018 and risen to global prominence, becoming the figurehead for a series of school strikes by children around the world.

The Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity recognises the contributions of people, groups of people and/or organisations from all over the world in order to mitigate and adapt to climate change stand out for its novelty, innovation and impact.
